The Unvarnished Verdict
No more discount mentality!
The Allgäu-Walser-Pass in its current form is an outdated model. It manages the lack of vision instead of creating it.
The disadvantages, in a nutshell:
Unfair: Massive differences in services depending on the resort (Basic vs. Plus).
Confusing: Too many exceptions, rules, and additional packages.
Socially unjust: Guests are prioritized over locals for public transport.
Small-minded: Every village does its own thing instead of acting as “One Allgäu”.
Recommendations for action for the region:
Radical standardization: One pass for the entire Allgäu. The same service for every guest, regardless of whether they sleep in Sonthofen or Oy-Mittelberg.
Mobility for all: Integration of locals into the free system. Financed by a fair levy that strengthens the entire transport system, instead of just subsidizing guest buses.
Infrastructure turnaround: Moving away from a fixation on ski operations. Investment in continuous, high-quality cycling and hiking trail networks that ignore municipal boundaries.
Courage for honesty: The Allgäu must stop defining itself through discounts. Quality and easy accessibility are the currencies of the future – not a 1 Euro saving at the checkout.
The Allgäu must decide: Does it want to remain a patchwork of discount stations or become a modern, networked living region? The time for small steps is over.
