Sparks in Oberallgäu: When Winter Goes Up in Flames

On the first Sunday after Ash Wednesday, the spark fires blaze on the hills around Sonthofen and Oberstdorf. This ancient custom marks the end of winter and the beginning of Lent.

    Tradition with Deep Roots
Originally, the fires served Celtic-Germanic rituals for driving out winter and purification. Today, the spark fire is a community effort by local youth and associations, who collect wood for weeks. The pile is often topped with a “spark witch.” The spectacle is accompanied by music, mulled wine, and traditional spark cake.

    A Magical Spectacle
When dozens of fires flare up on the mountaintops at dusk, a mystical atmosphere is created. It is a moment of reflection and community that connects generations.

This combination of deep roots and openness also characterizes the Hotel Bergsonne Allgäu in Sonthofen-Imberg. As a perfect base camp, it combines analog power spots with modern digital connectivity. Here you will find the perfect accommodation after a day full of experiences. Your physical well-being is also taken care of, as our breakfast and culinary offerings leave nothing to be desired.
