Where can I play golf near Sonthofen?

At the Golf Resort Sonnenalp und Oberallgäu, between Sonthofen, Fischen and Ofterschwang. It has two 18-hole courses and a short course.

The Sonnenalp course is a par 73, founded in 1975. The view takes in the high Allgäu Alps. The Restaurant Waldhaus sits at the 18th green.

The Oberallgäu course lies a few hundred metres further south near Bolsterlang. It is a par 72, opened in 2004, gently rolling. Hole nine counts as the key hole, a par 4 over 353 metres. The Restaurant Seehaus sits at the 18th green. The resort also includes the Gundelsberg short course.

Is there a course in Oberstdorf?

Yes. The Golfclub Oberstdorf, founded in 1961, is a 9-hole course at around 950 metres, laid out on three terraces. The highest green sits at 1,000 metres. There is a driving range, golf pros and an indoor hall for winter training. Play runs from April to October.

A little further, in Steibis near Oberstaufen, lies the Golfclub Oberstaufen-Steibis. A par 70 on the slope, where every shot wants planning.

From the house

Without a car, golf here hardly makes sense. You need your bag and usually a tee time in the morning.

What is different from the lowlands?

The altitude and the terrain. In Oberstdorf the highest green sits at 1,000 metres, in Steibis you play on the slope. Balls fly a little further at altitude, lies are rarely flat. In summer, thunderstorms often build in the afternoon. If you start early, you usually play in the dry.

And if it rains?

Then you train indoors. The Indoor Arena Allgäu in Sonthofen offers golf training under a roof, ten minutes from the house. The Golfclub Oberstdorf has its own hall for winter training, the Golf Arena Allgäu.

What I check beforehand

You ask the club directly about tee times, green fees and handicap requirements. The rules for guests differ from course to course. In high season, plan ahead.

What the house adds

Breakfast from 7 am for the early tee time. Parking right at the house is included in the price. If you want to store your bag under cover, book a space in the underground car park. After the round, the Alpen-Glühen, our Finnish sauna, is waiting, and in the evening the quiet at 900 metres.
